Teaching children with disabilities can be a little different from teaching children that have an average ability level. Many people refer to the various issues that disabled children face as learning disabilities. There are a growing number of teachers who see that it is simply a learning difference. For many years, it has become clear that there is more than one way that each student learns, even if they have normal ability. The standard style of teaching does not offer the same advantages as it does for those who are naturally audio learners. A teacher’s ability to recognize the learning differences in students whether they are disabled or not, is going to help the student be able to be taught in their own learning style as well as the teacher’s delivery of the information. There are some cases where disabled children need other tools to help them better communicate their needs, and focus on their assignments, but for the most part, it is about finding what motivates them. If a student likes to use their hands, and they love horses, having letters that have images of horses on them to spell words can be very helpful. They get to use their hands, and they see something that they love. Many teachers have found that when appealing to the natural tendencies of the child, that they can help them succeed in areas that they generally have had difficulty with in the past. Tailoring the educational experience to the needs of the child, and not trying to mold the child to the curriculum seems to be a much more successful approach. |
